Just
30 minutes from Melbourne, Australia in Warrensbrook Faire
|
|
|
First and foremost, Witchmount Estate is a family business. Established in 1991 primarily as a hobby to provide some respite from the demands of running other very successful businesses, Matt and Gaye Ramunno planted the first vines on the rich, red volcanic plains of Rockbank. The hobby rapidly
grew and supported by sons Tony, Paul and Ben, the family philosophy was,
and still is, to produce the finest possible wine at Witchmount. |

| rewarding destinations.
Arriving at the winery just half an hour from Melbourne, you are immediately
aware of the balance between comfortable, casual European style hospitality
and the efficient nature of a modern vineyard and winery. Witchmount is
open from Wednesday to Sunday for lunch, dinner and wine sales. Sunday is
often a special day, as the restaurant is open right through to dinner with
live music and entertainment presented in the garden rotunda.
Once the wheat and barley bread basket of Melbourne, the area has a rich history of wine and food provision, with grape growing and wine making dating back to the 1860's in nearby Sunbury. There are currently almost 40 acres under vine on the estate with 20 more acres scheduled for planting by 2001. Most major varieties are planted, including cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, merlot, chardonnay and semillon, plus cabernet franc, sauvignon blanc and nebbiolo. With the interest in Italian wines now rising, Witchmount has brought forward its plans to expand into these popular varieties. Pinot gris and barbera will make their appearance this year, with others to follow in the future. New building is also intended on the estate to cater for conference accommodation, educational facilities for viticulture and wine making and the establishment of a wine museum. |

Shiraz
The Witchmount flagship, this outstanding wine shows every hallmark of a great shiraz. A bouquet of red berry fruits, black pepper and spice aromas with a full bodied palate of generous sweet favors and firm, dry tannins on the finish. Ideal with game, red meat, rich stews, pasta with hearty sauces and medium to strong cheese. |

| 1998
Cabernet Sauvignon This wine is best described as both powerful and elegant, with sweet cassis fruit tempered by savory characters, fine-grained tannins and a long finish. Great cellaring potential typical of the variety, it will develop more with age. An early vintage harvested in the first week of April at up to 14o baumé, this excellent wine already boasts gold, silver and two bronze awards. Enjoy with hams and salami, red meats, pasta and cheese. |

Nebbiolo A native of Italy, nebbiolo is the variety grown in the Piedimonte region where barolo and barberesco, some of Italy's finest and long-lived wines are made. This vintage from Witchmount exhibits the typical aromatic complexity of the variety and expresses a fullness of flavor that balances the relatively high acidity and pronounced tannins. A wine that will reward medium term cellaring. |

| 1998
Rosé Juice from our our estate grown nebbiolo was given minimal skin contact, fermented in barrel and then blended with pinot noir to produce this fruity, light red style. Fruit sweetness, barrel ferment and varietal character impart a full flavor and dry finish. |

Sauvignon Blanc Harvested at between 11.5o and 12o baumé, this is a typical sauvignon blanc showing a bouquet of tropical fruit and underlying grassiness with a fresh fruit flavor on the palate and a clean dry finish. An early vintage at Witchmount, the wine should be consumed in the year of vintage and is ideal with seafood, Asian style dishes or as an aperitif. |

| 1999
Semillon Zesty and grassy while young, this unwooded wine will, with time, develop the classic toasty honeyed character of an aged cool climate semillon. Harvested mid season at between 11o to 12o baumé, this is a wine that demands careful cellaring. A classic partner to chicken and white meats, salads and risotto. |
