Since 1985, Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House has been a favorite of locals and visitors to Vancouver. Located at Robson and Thurlow streets, this busy American brasserie “Is a turn of the century restaurant with a return of traditional values that last forever—a place for everyone—everyday” says Proprietor Bud Kanke.

Joe Fortes was an 1880s bartender and lifeguard. He taught children how to swim, is credited with saving 29 lives and was a true symbol of Hospitality and Community service. Each year, the restaurant in Joe’s name undertakes a fundraising event for disadvantaged children.

Joe’s Grande Room has to be seen firsthand to be appreciated. The horseshoe-shaped bar soars 30 feet towards the ceiling. The mahogany, brass and marble decor envelops guests, and Peter Wilson playing saloon standards on the piano gives the room a “live” buzz.

With over 150,000 oysters served yearly, Joe’s has earned the title of Vancouver's Best Oyster Bar.

  Seafood and Chop House


Northwest regional seafood is the mainstay, and steaks and chops are hand cut on the premises.

The year-round Roof Garden, which features a smoking lounge and fireplace, offers a summer lineup of grills, icy oysters and luscious salads; guests can also socialize with friends over martinis.

Executive Chef Brian Fowke uses many organic elements from the rooftop herb garden in his cooking. All dishes are prepared with a focus on natural favors, enhanced by simple sauce reductions, fresh fruit salsas and sometimes just lemon.

Desserts are prepared daily by the in-house pastry chef. This year saw the introduction of Joe’s Seafood Tower on Ice, a multilevel selection of fresh oysters, mussels, clams, prawns, scallops, lobster and crab.

Joe’s white-jacketed staff are chosen for personality, warmth and shtick, and provide friendly, caring professional service. Joe’s is known as a people-watching place, and many movie and sports celebrities are regulars.

This March, proprietor Kanke received the ultimate accolade with Vancouver magazine’s Lifetime Culinary Achievement Award 2000. In 1996, Joe’s, on top of its many wine awards, won the Most Memorable Meal Award from Where magazine.
