A
rediscovery of the classic American Tavern offering extraordinary New
American Cuisine and hospitality in a
historic landmark building between Broadway & Park Ave. S., New York, NY |
|
|
Gramercy
Tavern is a stunning American interpretation of a warm, luxurious restaurant
often found in the European countryside. Superior cuisine, wines and hospitality
are the trademark of this wood-beamed, antique-filled restaurant. Located
in the historic heart of Manhattan's vibrant Flatiron District.
Two hundred years ago and turn of the next millennium, that's the hybrid sense of time and neighborhood evident at Gramercy Tavern. A little history and a little mystery amplify the design, which draws from the rustic aspects of |

early American
architecture, as well as the existing Beaux-Arts details and grid layout
of the department store that formerly occupied the space. The design team
took advantage of the 20 foot by 20 foot bays to establish three dining
areas, each with its own character, in addition to a cozy private dining
room. An intimate space that recalls Early American taverns, something
the designers achieved by relying on interpretation rather than imitation. |

The
Critics Say: "Believe the hype" say most of the 2,000 people who rated this years old Gramercy American, "superlative" food by Tom Colicchio, "unrushed", "attitude-free" service, supervised by Danny Meyer and "cozy", "colonial" tavern decor make it a "hit"; to avoid waiting for a reservation of if the $56 prix fixe dinner seems pricey, try the less expensive casual Tavern Room without reserving; even critics who say its "good, but not great" recognize that it's steadily improving. Within its first three months, Gramercy Tavern was touted as "the next great restaurant" and singled out as "the warmest and most charming of all the new city restaurants in New York New York Magazine Danny Meyer has turned the tables on four stars, combining friendly waiters, rustic dining rooms, and a menu that hops from foie gras to sautéed cod Travel & Leisure Gramercy Tavern, selected as one of the best new restaurants in 1994 Esquire |
"eating at Gramercy Tavern is a bit like drinking great wine out of the barrel, you can almost taste the future and it appears extremely promising." The New York Times, Ruth Reichl |
