Gallagher's Steak House
1998 America's Top Ten Steak Houses - Midtown Manhattan, 228 W 52nd St., New York, NY

Tom Horan's America's Top Ten Club
is proud to name their list of America's Top Ten Steak Houses for 1998: 1. Gallagher's Steak House, New York, NY

A huge room with brass railing and red checkered tablecloths serves up a classic New York steak house experience. And, it's been serving it up for years. There's meat hanging in window and celebrity photos hanging on the walls. Located in the theater district, it's the perfect place when you want a great steak before a show. Visiting Gallagher's Steak House, you'll find a steakhouse that serves American especially known for steaks. Expect to pay over $60 per person.

America's first steak house, Gallagher's was the creation of Helen Gallagher, a former Ziegfeld Follies dancer and the wife of half of the famed Gallagher and Shean comedy team.

Always in step with the times, Helen Gallagher billed Gallagher's as the

speakeasy that served steaks when she opened it in 1927, the same year that "Show Boat" conquered Broadway, Babe Ruth walloped 60 home runs, and Charles Lindbergh earned himself a ticker-tape parade. Then, when prohibition came to an end six years later, the resourceful Mrs. Gallagher repositioned Gallagher's as the steak house that served drinks.

The aura of that unforgettable era is still alive at Gallagher's. So are all of the original Helen Gallagher trademarks such as the grand circular bar, the planked flooring, the red-and-white checkered tablecloths, the burnished-wood paneling, the nostalgic portraits of sporting legends and, most-watering of all, the hickory charcoal-grilled steaks.

This one-of-a-kind steak house for people who demand the real thing is a favorite among out-of-towners as well as native New Yorkers, not to mention celebrities. Together, they not only like the warm, no-nonsense atmosphere of Gallagher's, they appreciate all that it takes to be the benchmark for all steak houses from noon to midnight every day of the year.

The Critics Say:

"Its walls are still decked out with some of the rarest, most historic playbills, posters, photos, and sports memorabilia anywhere. You can trace the history of Broadway theater on these walls, marvel at paintings depicting legendary New York Yankees, and sit at the bar and still hear the kind of Gotham patois that Damon Runyon and Ring Lardner made famous...This is truly great beef, not the anemic stuff you'll find in the chain steak houses. Beautifully marbleized, seared to dark perfection on the outside, pink as a rose within, this is what beef is all about and almost never is outside of Gallagher's...The restaurant serves massive lobsters, and the superb American lamb chops are as big as a welterweight's fist. The soups are some of the best in the city. There's a good wine list, with a particularly fine selection of tannic-rich reds."
John Mariani, Robb Report

"When you look past (the waiters) at the crowd and the refrigerated room with its hanging meat, you know this is the real thing."
Ruth Reichl, The New York Times

"Here's the beef! This sports memorabilia-filled, red-checked tablecloth 'old timer' has 'aged as well as steaks'...a 'must' before or after theater."
Zagat New York City Restaurant Survey

The birthplace of the world-famous New York Strip, Gallagher's is also the steak house for the most generous servings of shrimp cocktail, onion rings, and fresh vegetables including potatoes served seven ways, as well as lobster, swordfish, salmon, lamb chops, and chicken. Their numerous traditional American desserts range from cheesecake to apple pie.

Their Aging Room is Right Next
to their Dining Room.
The way Gallagher's looks at it, there are no two ways to age beef. That's why they dry age all of their USDA Prime at 36 degrees in their own dry aging room for 21 days. The dry age makes the beef as tender and tasty as beef can get. And you can see their beef dry aging right before your eyes. What you see is what you get. Just look through their aging room windows before and after you come into their restaurant
